2002.05.21: End AFL-CIO Complicity with Sharon’s War Crimes

End AFL-CIO Complicity with Sharon’s War Crimes

“[Palestinian] civilians [in Jenin] were killed willfully or unlawfully [by the Israeli military]. . . . [which] used Palestinian civilians as ‘human shields’ and used indiscriminate and excessive force. . . . The abuses we documented in Jenin are extremely serious, and in some cases appear to be war crimes.” –Human Rights Watch, May 3, 2002 <http://hrw.org/press/2002/05/jenin0503.htm>

Today, Israeli Consul General Alon Pinkus, a “special guest” of the AFL-CIO Israel Bonds National Labor Division, will “express his gratitude to the labor movement for its decades of support.”

As trade unionists, we are appalled that our union dues—as well as our tax dollars—fund Sharon’s ethnic cleansing in the Occupied Territories.

Labor should stand with both Palestinian workers and the Israeli Peace Movement by divesting from State of Israel Bonds, and calling for:

•An end to Sharon’s war on Palestinians—and to the U.S. government’s money, weapons and encouragement that makes it possible.

•Immediate Israeli withdrawal from the Occupied Territories.

•Palestinian self-determination, including the right of statehood and the Right of Return.
